If you have three/four days only, plan a short itinerary including Edinburgh and an insight of the Highlands with Loch Lomond. If you have more than a week, have a look at the itinerary below:

First step: Edinburgh

Necessary time: 2 days

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital, the city reveals much curiosity: between its cobbled streets, its neo classical and neo gothic architecture, its legends and undergrounds you cannot be bored! You cannot miss Edinburgh castle as it dominates the town, perched high up on Castle Rock hill. Then, visit the Mary King’s Close, a maze of streets and undergrounds built by the inhabitants in the 17^th century, the Mary King’s Close is well-known for its scary legends and myths.

Afterwards, have a stroll in the city centre, the Royal Mile is the main road and the heart of the old town, admire its cobbled streets, listen to the bagpipes’ players in the street and why not have a haggis tasting?

Keep in mind that the National Museum of Scotland is free, its internal architecture is beautiful and its collection very varied. If the sun is up, plan a walk to the summit of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano located very close to the city and offering a spectacular view over Edinburgh!

Step 2: Glasgow

Necessary time: 1 day

Although Edinburgh is the Scottish capital, Glasgow is the biggest city of Scotland and the third city of the United Kingdom. It hosts many free museums such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Riverside Museum! To know more about the Bagpiping let’s go to the National Piping Centre! Then, have your lunch break in the Botanical Gardens of Glasgow.

Step 3: Loch Lomond

Necessary time: 1 day

This lake (or loch) is located in the south of the Scottish Highlands, it’s the biggest of the United Kingdom’s lochs, its surface area is 27.5 square miles. Stop for a walk and a picnic at the edge of the loch before embarking on a mini cruise of approximately one hour (to book it’s this way). Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket 😉

Step 4: Fort William & Glenfinnan viaduct

Necessary time: 1 day

Fort William is the second biggest town of the Highlands after Inverness. Fort William is located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest summit in the United Kingdom (4,411 ft high). There is also a train station from which the Jacobite Train departs to reach Mallaig, via the Glenfinnan viaduct (famous scene in the Harry Potter saga). The cult films Braveheart and Highlander were shot not far from Fort William.

Step 5: Ile of Skye

Necessary time: 1 or 2 days

The Isle of Skye is the widest of the Inner Hebrides’ archipelago. It is famous for its wild atypical landscapes. We can find the Storr, a series of sharp rock pinnacles located at the top of a ridge, the Fairy Pools, which is a fall of crystal-clear water and the Kilt Rocks and Mealt Falls, a cliff from which a waterfall cascades into the sea! So, still not convinced?

Step 6: Loch Ness & Inverness

Necessary time: 1 day

The Loch Ness? You have surely heard about this mysterious Scottish lake where would live a marine monster most commonly known as the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie. This legend has made the lake famous, indeed, since the so-called monster was spotted in the 30’s many underwater expeditions and researches have been conducted without any result. The creature is fictional but the lake still rouses the public’s interest and tourists are still coming to unravel the mystery! On the edge of the lake we can find the ruins of Urquhart’s castle where the Visitor Centre and a café stand.

Step 7: Crieff & the Glenturret Distillery

Necessary time: Half a day

Crieff is a market town mainly known for its whisky which is produced in Glenturret distillery. If you are interested in the preparation method of this typical Scottish drink (or Irish, the debate is still open) then come visit Glenturret’s distillery!

Step 8: St Andrews

Necessary time: Half a day

St Andrews is a small seaside town hosting the third oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. It is a very famous university, Prince William and the Duchess of de Cambridge used to study there! St Andrews is considered as the cradle of golf, the Golf legislative authority was founded there in 1754. The town now counts 5 golf courses; so, are you tempted by an introduction to this typical sport?

Step 9: Stirling

Necessary time: 1 day

Stirling was once the capital of the Scottish kingdom and a medieval town, it hosts an impressive castle and Wallace Monument, a tower elevating to 67 metres, built to commemorate Sir William Wallace, one of the main leaders during the First War for Scottish Independence.

Step 10: The Kelpies

Necessary time: 1 hour

On your way back to Edinburgh stop at the Kelpies, 30-metre-high sculptures representing horses. According to the legends, kelpies are mythological creatures living in running waters, they often take the form of a horse but they can also take a human form.

Return to Edinburgh

Here you are, it’s the end of this itinerary, have a last stop at the Elephant House Café which is now famous for often hosting J.K. Rowling when she started to think about the Harry Potter story.

Feel free to adapt timings of each step of this itinerary according to your wishes! You can also combine Scotland and a bit of England!  As for nature, don’t forget Wales which has not been invaded by tourists yet 😉

Si vous avez trois/quatre jours seulement, planifiez un itinéraire concis incluant Édimbourg et un aperçu des Highlands avec le Loch Lomond. Si vous avez plus d’une semaine voici une idée d’itinéraire :

Première étape : Édimbourg

Temps nécessaire : 2 jours

Édimbourg est la capitale de l’Écosse,  c’est une ville qui offre de nombreuses curiosités : entre ses ruelles pavées, son architecture néo-classique et néo-gothique, ses légendes et souterrains, vous ne pourrez pas vous ennuyer ! Impossible de manquer le château d’Édimbourg, en effet il domine la ville, perché en haut de la colline de Castle Rock. Visitez ensuite le Mary King’s Close, ce labyrinthe de ruelles et souterrains qui fut construit par les habitants de la ville au 17ème siècle, le Mary King’s Close est réputé pour ses mythes et légendes.

Puis, baladez-vous dans le centre-ville, le Royal Mile est l’artère principale et le cœur de la vieille ville : admirez ses ruelles pavées, écoutez les joueurs de cornemuse dans la rue et pourquoi ne pas faire une dégustation de haggis ?

Pensez au musée national d’Écosse qui est gratuit, son architecture intérieure est magnifique et sa collection très variée. Si le soleil est au rendez-vous prévoyez une petite randonnée jusqu’au sommet  de Arthur’s Seat, un volcan éteint situé tout proche de la ville et qui offre une vue imprenable sur celle-ci !

Étape 2 : Glasgow

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Bien qu’Édimbourg soit la capitale écossaise, Glasgow est la plus grande ville d’Écosse et troisième ville du Royaume-Uni. Elle abrite de nombreux musées gratuits tels que le Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum et le Riverside Museum dont le design est impressionnant ! Pour en savoir plus sur la Cornemuse direction le National Piping Centre ! Puis prenez votre pause-déjeuner dans les jardins botaniques de Glasgow.

Étape 3 : Loch Lomond

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Ce lac (ou loch) est situé au sud des Highlands écossais, c’est le plus grand des lochs de Grande-Bretagne, sa superficie est de 71 km2. Arrêtez-vous pour une balade et un pic-nic au bord du loch avant d’embarquer pour une mini croisière d’environ une heure (pour réserver c’est par ici). Prévoyez des vêtements chauds et une veste imperméable 😉

Étape 4 : Fort William & Glenfinnan viaduct

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Fort William est la deuxième plus grande ville des Highlands après Inverness. Fort William est située au pied de Ben Nevis, le sommet le plus haut du Royaume-Uni (1,344 mètres d’altitude). On y trouve aussi la gare ferroviaire d’où part le Jacobite Train pour rejoindre Mallaig, en passant par le viaduc de Glenfinnan (fameuse scène de la saga Harry Potter). Les films cultes Braveheart et Highlander furent tournés non loin de Fort William.

Étape 5 : Ile de Skye

Temps nécessaire : 1 ou 2 jours

L’Ile de Skye est la plus vaste de l’archipel des Hébrides. Elle est célèbre pour ses paysages sauvages et atypiques. On y trouve notamment la chaine de Storr, une série de pics acérés située en haut d’une crête, les Fairy Pools, une cascade d’eau cristalline et Kilt Rocks and Mealt Falls, une falaise surplombant la mer d’où jaillit une cascade d’eau ! Alors, toujours pas convaincu ?

Étape 6 : Loch Ness & Inverness

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Le Loch Ness ? Vous avez forcément déjà entendu parler de ce mystérieux lac écossais où vivrait une créature marine plus communément appelée Monstre du Loch Ness ou Nessie. Cette légende a fait la renommée du lac, en effet, depuis que la soi-disant créature fut aperçue dans les années 1930, de nombreuses expéditions sous-marines et  recherches ont été menées sans pour autant donner de résultat concret. La créature est fictive mais le lac suscite toujours autant d’intérêt, les touristes sont nombreux à y venir avec l’espoir de percer le mystère ! Sur les rives on trouve les ruines du château d’Urquhart où se trouve le Centre des visiteurs et un café.

Étape 7 : Crieff & The Glenturret Distillery

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée

Crieff est une ville marchande principalement connue pour son whisky, en effet celui-ci est produit dans la distillerie de Glenturret. Si vous êtes intéressé par la production de cette boisson typique écossaise (ou irlandaise, le débat est toujours ouvert) alors venez visiter la distillerie de Glenturret !

Étape 8 : St Andrews

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée

St Andrews est une petite ville côtière qui héberge la troisième plus ancienne université du Royaume-Uni après Oxford et Cambridge. C’est une université très renommée, le Prince William et la Duchesse de Cambridge y ont fait leurs études ! St Andrews est considérée comme le berceau du golf, l’autorité législative du golf y a été fondée en 1754. La ville compte aujourd’hui cinq parcours de golf ; alors, tenté par une initiation à ce sport typique ?

Étape 9 : Stirling

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée – 1 jour

Stirling fut autrefois la capitale du royaume d’Écosse et une ville médiévale, elle possède un château impressionnant et le Wallace Monument, une tour s’élevant à 67 mètres de haut, construite en commémoration de Sir William Wallace, un des principaux leaders pendant la Première Guerre pour l’Indépendance écossaise.

Étape 10 : The Kelpies

Temps nécessaire : 1 heure

En redescendant de Stirling vers Édimbourg faites un arrêt aux Kelpies, deux sculptures de chevaux d’une trentaine de mètres de hauteur. D’après les légendes écossaises, les kelpies sont des créatures  métamorphes vivants dans les eaux courantes qui prennent le plus souvent la forme de chevaux, elles peuvent aussi prendre une forme humaine.

Retour à Édimbourg

Et voilà, vous êtes arrivé à la fin de cet itinéraire, terminez par un arrêt au Elephant House, célèbre café que J.K. Rowling fréquentait régulièrement où elle trouva son inspiration pour écrire Harry Potter.

Libre à vous d’adapter les timings de chaque étape de cet itinéraire en fonction de vos envies ! Vous pouvez aussi combiner un bout d’Écosse avec un peu d’Angleterre ! Pour le côté nature n’oubliez pas le Pays de Galles qui n’est pas encore très touristique 😉
