1- The Lion King

Mamma Mia is a musical gathering Abba’s greatest hits around Sophie’s story. Living on a Greek island with her mother, Sophie is in search of her identity. 3- Wicked

Based on the famous novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, Wicked tells the story of the Witches of Oz: a friendship between two young women who meet as sorcery students. The show has been acclaimed as “a world class West End musical with stunning spectacle, a heart-warming story and unforgettable songs” (Official London Theatre).

4- Matilda

Matilda’s character is inspired by Roald Dahl’s novel (Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Matilda is a young girl neglected by her parents; she is very clever and discovers that she has a special power! Go to the show to find out the ending 😉

5- Thriller

A tribute to the king of Pop Michael Jackson, Thriller will astonish you! Featuring the first songs performed by the Jackson 5 to his most famous hits such as Billie Jean and of course Thriller, the show brings back to life one of the best singer in the world for a few hours. The dance movements and mimics are quite impressive as well!

1- Bath : a guided tour of the city and the Roman Baths

Bath is a town located in Somerset, it was originally founded by the Romans due to the proximity of thermal baths. Thanks to the baths and the gorgeous Georgian architecture the city slightly became more and more famous. It is now classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. Have a guided tour of the city to admire the numerous architectural buildings and above all, visit the Roman Baths, a symbol of the city.

2- Cardiff : a guided tour, the castle and the Big Pit Museum

Cardiff is Wales’ capital city, it is located to the West of Bath (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes away). Cardiff is famous for hosting many high-profile sporting events, it was even awarded the title of European Capital of Sport in 2014; rugby is the “favourite” welsh sport. If you are a fan, do not miss the Millennium Stadium.

Have a stroll in the city centre freely or have a tour held by a local guide, end the tour by a visit of Cardiff castle which was built by the Romans in 1091!

At approximately an hour’s drive from Cardiff centre you’ll arrive at the Big Pit, a museum classified as an industrial heritage museum which was a coal mine from 1880 to 1980. Nowadays you can visit the mine and school groups can have special workshops. It is very interesting to see how life was for the thousands of men working there at that time.

3- Bristol : Banksy Street Art

Bristol is located in England, less than an hour’s drive from Bath. The town was once a major port, especially for textile trade and unfortunately slave trade. This is a colourful city, built high-up, among which the famous Clifton Suspension bridge stands.

The well-known artist Banksy first painted in Bristol’s streets, Banksy is a filmmaker and a painter specialising in street art, he paints to pass on messages, often with a political meaning. Go on a special guided tour of Banksy’s street art and finish with a painting workshop (send us an email for further information).

4- Cheddar Gorge

The Cheddar Gorge is located very close to Cheddar’s village in Somerset. The Gorge hosts several caves in which were found many archaeological remains including the oldest skeleton of Great Britain (9000 years old). The most surprising cave is Gough’s Cave; you can see hundreds of stalagmites! One of the roads leading to the Gorge (the B3135) was even elected Best road for driving in the UK as its view is so spectacular!

Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland

It’s this viaduct located in Scotland that the Hogwarts Express goes through to reach the famous School. You can embark on the Jacobite Train, a steam railway leaving from Fort William going to Mallaig. Perfect for an authentic visit of Northern Scotland!

Christchurch College, Oxford

Who ever dreamt of going to school and have a dining room looking like the Hogwarts’ one, with its endless ceiling and all those appetising delicacies?!

This room is real and looks very much like the one in the film which had been modified by special effects. It is actually a part of the famous Oxford University, located in Christchurch College. This big Hall is not only used as an attraction for tourists, university students also have their meals here every day and formal dinners are regularly held here.

These two cathedrals have served for filming locations for Hogwarts’ corridors and cloister.

London

Many scenes in this saga have been shot in London, among them include King’s Cross station, where the 9 ¾ platform stands.

Saint-Pancras station (see picture) has also served as a filming location due to its impressive architecture. The building is classified Grade 1 (Westminster Abbey is classified Grade 1 as well to give you a better idea).

We can observe a few bridges such as Lambeth Bridge (the magical bus shrinks to go through two double-decker buses on that bridge) and the Millenium Bridge which is destroyed by Death-eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince; in real life this bridge is intact and can be crossed to reach St Paul’s Cathedral or the Tate Modern.

We can also see Piccadilly Circus in the sixth film, London Zoo and the Leadenhall Market (Diagon Alley) in the first film.

The nature locations

They have mostly been shot in Scotland which is famous for its mountains and endless landscapes. We can mention the following Lochs: Loch Etive, Glen Coe, Loch Eilit, Loch Arkaig.

The cottage where the heroes take refuge in the seventh film is located in Pembrokeshire National Park in Wales, on Freshwater West Beach.

The Seven Sisters’ Cliffs (South England, close to Eastbourne) have also been used for several scenes in this saga.

But where did the magic happen at the very beginning?

It’s because her train is running late that J.K. Rowlings starts to imagine the story of a normal boy who discovers he is a wizard. Rowling started to take notes, imagine characters and arrived in King’s Cross with a bunch of ideas in mind.

Rowling wrote a lot in a café which became famous afterwards: the Elephant House café, located in the heart of Edinburgh. From this place we can see Edinburg castle, which looks a bit like Hogwarts castle.

Le Pays de Galles est très peu fréquenté par les touristes, de ce fait, il est très plaisant de voyager et de visiter ce pays à son rythme sans les masses de touristes habituelles, un vrai havre de sérénité !

L’atmosphère

Le Pays de Galles est un endroit atypique, tout d’abord on y parle anglais et gallois, le gallois est la première langue celtique parlée au monde après l’irlandais, il est toujours enseigné à l’école. Tous les panneaux de signalisation sont en anglais et gallois. Les gallois sont très fiers de leur nationalité et aiment étendre le drapeau du pays un peu partout (image ci-contre).

Le Pays de Galles est destiné aux passionnés de nature et de grands espaces, si vous n’aimez que la ville alors soyons honnêtes, ce n’est pas pour vous ! Le Pays de Galles n’a rien à envier à ses voisins d’Irlande et d’Écosse : on y trouve les mêmes paysages sauvages, les montagnes, les lacs, des sentiers de randonnées, de petits villages pittoresques… Il y a trois parcs nationaux au Pays de Galles : Brecons Beacons et Pembrokeshire au sud et le magnifique parc de Snowdonia au nord. On y trouve le sommet le plus élevé du Pays de Galles, le Mont Snowdon (1085 m) qu’on peut atteindre soit à pied soit en train.

The Peacefulness

North Wales is still not very touristy so it’s very pleasant to travel to and visit the country at your own pace without crowds of tourists. A heaven of serenity!

The Atmosphere

1- Borough Market

Borough market is London’s oldest food market, being over 1000 years old. Most of the stallholders are producers and farmers so you can be sure to get the best quality of food. Here you can find everything: meat, fish, bread, cheese etc. One of the best things about Borough Market is its environmental commitment, in fact, all cardboard, paper, plastic and so on from the Market is recycled. Borough Market is also a member of the Slow Food project, “a worldwide movement that supports a low impact approach to food production” (Definition from Borough Market’s website).

2- Old Spitalfields Market

The Old Spitalfields Market is located in the trendy area of Shoreditch. The market is a mix of street food stalls, independent craftsman stalls, shops and restaurants. As you probably know, London is a multicultural city; historically the market was hosting transient communities, mostly new immigrants but in recent years the area has been gentrified by creative industries and young professionals.

The refurbished market has a very modern design and is never too busy compared to more famous markets such as Covent Garden. So why not plan your afternoon in this hipster area?!

3- Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road Flower Market is a street market, opened on Sundays from 8 am to 2 pm. You will find a wide range of fresh flowers, plants, shrubs at competitive prices but also other shops selling antiques, garden accessories etc. So if you have green fingers (and even if you don’t), this is the perfect place to go.

4- Camden Market

Camden Market is the most famous market in London. It is always very busy so if you can, try to visit it on a week day. Don’t eat before going as there are many street food stalls and there is something for every taste: curries, burgers, falafels, bao buns, pizza, sushi, burritos, (vegetarian and vegan options as well) and much more! I bet you are hungry now, aren’t you?

Apart from the food part, Camden Market is the right place to look for vintage clothes, original handcraft creations, vinyl discs and so on. When you go to Camden Town, don’t forget to take your camera as Camden is famous for its eccentricity and its numerous street art paintings. A definite must-see!

5- Brixton Market

Brixton is a lively area located in the South of London. There is a multi-ethnic community, in fact, the first wave of immigrants formed by an African-Caribbean community arrived in the fifties and settled in Brixton. In the eighties the area was the scene of riots because of the unemployment and poverty, conducting to crime. However, in the latest years, Brixton has become a trendy area, hosting regular farmers’ markets and other kind of stalls such as clothes, gadgets, accessories (Found mainly on Electric Avenue).

Brixton also has an incredible indoor market: Brixton Village, hosting multicultural restaurants. Don’t miss the Memorial painting of David Bowie in Tunstall road (Brixton is David Bowie’s birth place).

1- Le musée du Titanic

Le musée du Titanic est le plus gros musée au monde consacré au paquebot le plus tristement célèbre de l’histoire. Dans ce musée vous trouverez des reconstitutions des différentes salles du bateau (chambres, salle de bal…), divers objets, des témoignages et en apprendrez plus sur sa construction et sa triste fin. Le bâtiment qui héberge le musée est moderne et très impressionnant (voir image ci-dessus).

2- Admirer la Chaussée des Géants

La Chaussée des Géants (Giant’s Causeway) est un site naturel classé au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco et formé par une série d’environ 40 000 colonnes en pierre de basalte situées au bord de l’océan Atlantique. Ces colonnes créent un rempart naturel contre la mer et les tempêtes. Les colonnes sont toutes symétriques, c’est assez spectaculaire !

3- Faire une visite guidée de Belfast

Belfast est une ville pleine d’histoire, surtout célèbre pour son passé politique violent pendant le XX^ème siècle. Découvrez l’histoire de cette ville avec un tour en black taxi des fresques politiques, ou à pied avec un guide local.

4- Traverser le Pont de corde Carrick-a-Rede

Carrick-a-Rede est une minuscule île reliée à la terre ferme par un pont de corde. Le pont a été érigé par des pêcheurs de saumon il y a 350 ans, il mesure 20 mètres de long et se situe à 30 mètres au-dessus de la mer. C’est très impressionnant, même pour des personnes n’ayant pas le vertige ! La République d’Irlande est aussi entourée de petites îles telles que les Îles Aran.

5- Entrer dans les Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges, est une route encerclée par des dizaines de hêtres formant un tunnel atmosphérique. Selon la légende, l’endroit serait hanté par un fantôme appelé Lady Grey (la dame grise), qui serait vraisemblablement le fantôme d’une servante qui travaillait dans une maison à proximité et qui avait disparu dans d’étranges circonstances. La route est désormais célèbre pour avoir servi de décor pour le tournage de la série télévisée Le Trône de Fer.

1- Oxford

The University of Oxford is the oldest University of the United Kingdom and all Anglophone countries; it dates back to 1096 which is when they first started teaching here. A lot of celebrities have studied here, just to mention a few: Albert Einstein, Adam Smith, Margaret Thatcher and even Hugh Grant! Impressed?

Oxford is a small city situated in the North-West of London, very practical for a day out if you are staying in London. Amongst the many things to do, you could have a walking tour of the city and of course you must visit Christchurch College, the biggest building of the University.

Christchurch was also used multiple times during the filming of the Harry Potter saga (the entrance to Hogwarts and of course the famous Great hall). Oxford also has a number of museums such as the Museum of Natural History or even the Museum of the History of Science.

2- Cambridge

Cambridge is the second oldest University of the United Kingdom (founded in 1209), just like Oxford, a number of famous celebrities have also studied here such as Stephen Hawking, Prince Charles and Emma Thompson. Cambridge is situated further away from London but it is still possible to spend the day.

A great way to discover Cambridge is to take a punting tour (either guided or self-guided) along the river Cam. A punt is a famous small boat made out of wood and manoeuvred with a long wooden pole, it isn’t too dissimilar from the Venetian gondolas. This tour will take you along the backs of the Universities so you can see all the buildings and the numerous bridges of the city, you will get to see it from a different point of view. Most chauffeurs will tell you stories and anecdotes along the way so it’s very pleasant. The College to visit in Cambridge has to be King’s College so after your tour you could pop in or maybe finish off your day with a cream tea.

3- St Andrews

St Andrews was founded in 1413; it’s the third oldest Anglophone University and it’s the oldest in Scotland. It also has its fair share of celebrities the most famous being Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge, they both met whilst studying there.

The town of St Andrews is situated North of Edinburgh and it’s right beside the sea, perfect for a day out if you are staying in Edinburgh for the week.  You can go and visit the University and take a walk around its small cobbled streets, another nice thing to do is go golfing on one of its very famous golf courses.
