Alors, si tu veux améliorer ton anglais et apprendre du vocabulaire, voici 5 idées de livres à lire en version originale anglaise : choisis celui qui te correspond le plus et go !

1- Registre post-apocalyptique: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Hunger Games est une trilogie de livres racontant l’histoire de Katniss, une jeune fille vivant dans un monde post-apocalyptique gouverné par un régime totalitaire. Chaque année sont organisés des jeux, ou 24 garçons et filles sont tirés au sort et devront s’entretuer pour gagner (et survivre). Katniss se retrouve à participer aux jeux pour sauver la vie de sa jeune sœur.

Ce livre a été écrit en anglais américain, si tu as déjà vu les films ça devrait être encore plus facile à comprendre.

2- Registre policier : The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle

Les Aventures de Sherlock Holmes est un recueil de plusieurs enquêtes policières menées par le fameux détective privé Sherlock Holmes, sans oublier son acolyte le Docteur Watson. Il y a en tout 12 nouvelles, ces histoires courtes sont idéales pour commencer à lire en anglais.

3- Registre romantique : Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austen

Ce classique de la littérature anglaise fut écrit par Jane Austen, qui s’est principalement inspirée de sa vie pour écrire ses romans. Orgueils et Préjugés est un portrait de la société anglaise du 18ème siècle dépeignant les relations sociales et les problèmes auxquels les femmes devaient faire face à cette époque (l’éducation, la nécessité du mariage pour s’élever en société etc.) sous fond de romance. Ce livre est plus ancien et demandera plus de concentration et un assez bon niveau d’anglais. Il existe cependant de nombreuses adaptations cinématographiques qui peuvent t’aider en complément du livre.

4- Registre aventure: Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

L’Ile au trésor est un récit d’aventures largement influencé par les récits populaires sur les pirates : carte au trésor, perroquet, jambe de bois, ile tropical, tout y est ! C’est un des premiers livres de ce genre, après Robinson Crusoe, l’histoire du célèbre aventurier fictif qui survécut sur une ile déserte pendant près de 28 ans.

5- Registre fantastique : Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter est la saga à lire en version originale ! Écrit pour un jeune public, le vocabulaire est basique et facile à comprendre. Les mots inventés et le vocabulaire lié à la magie peuvent être plus compliqués mais si tu as déjà vu les films tu pourras surement deviner, ça peut mettre devenir un challenge 😉

Conseils pratiques :

• Ne pas comprendre tous les mots est normal, le contexte te permettra de deviner. Si un mot pose vraiment problème et est important pour l’intrigue alors vérifies sa traduction pour ne pas rester dans le doute.
• Très important : choisis un roman à ton niveau et surtout dans un registre que tu aimes, si l’histoire te plait vraiment tu dévoreras le livre en quelques jours, au contraire si le livre ne te passionne pas tu ne seras pas motivé pour le terminer.
• Si tu penses qu’un roman est trop long pour toi, choisis un recueil de plusieurs histoires pour débuter, ou même une bande-dessinée. Sinon, relis un roman qui t’a plu dans sa version originale !

If you have three/four days only, plan a short itinerary including Edinburgh and an insight of the Highlands with Loch Lomond. If you have more than a week, have a look at the itinerary below:

First step: Edinburgh

Necessary time: 2 days

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital, the city reveals much curiosity: between its cobbled streets, its neo classical and neo gothic architecture, its legends and undergrounds you cannot be bored! You cannot miss Edinburgh castle as it dominates the town, perched high up on Castle Rock hill. Then, visit the Mary King’s Close, a maze of streets and undergrounds built by the inhabitants in the 17^th century, the Mary King’s Close is well-known for its scary legends and myths.

Afterwards, have a stroll in the city centre, the Royal Mile is the main road and the heart of the old town, admire its cobbled streets, listen to the bagpipes’ players in the street and why not have a haggis tasting?

Keep in mind that the National Museum of Scotland is free, its internal architecture is beautiful and its collection very varied. If the sun is up, plan a walk to the summit of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano located very close to the city and offering a spectacular view over Edinburgh!

Step 2: Glasgow

Necessary time: 1 day

Although Edinburgh is the Scottish capital, Glasgow is the biggest city of Scotland and the third city of the United Kingdom. It hosts many free museums such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Riverside Museum! To know more about the Bagpiping let’s go to the National Piping Centre! Then, have your lunch break in the Botanical Gardens of Glasgow.

Step 3: Loch Lomond

Necessary time: 1 day

This lake (or loch) is located in the south of the Scottish Highlands, it’s the biggest of the United Kingdom’s lochs, its surface area is 27.5 square miles. Stop for a walk and a picnic at the edge of the loch before embarking on a mini cruise of approximately one hour (to book it’s this way). Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket 😉

Step 4: Fort William & Glenfinnan viaduct

Necessary time: 1 day

Fort William is the second biggest town of the Highlands after Inverness. Fort William is located at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest summit in the United Kingdom (4,411 ft high). There is also a train station from which the Jacobite Train departs to reach Mallaig, via the Glenfinnan viaduct (famous scene in the Harry Potter saga). The cult films Braveheart and Highlander were shot not far from Fort William.

Step 5: Ile of Skye

Necessary time: 1 or 2 days

The Isle of Skye is the widest of the Inner Hebrides’ archipelago. It is famous for its wild atypical landscapes. We can find the Storr, a series of sharp rock pinnacles located at the top of a ridge, the Fairy Pools, which is a fall of crystal-clear water and the Kilt Rocks and Mealt Falls, a cliff from which a waterfall cascades into the sea! So, still not convinced?

Step 6: Loch Ness & Inverness

Necessary time: 1 day

The Loch Ness? You have surely heard about this mysterious Scottish lake where would live a marine monster most commonly known as the Loch Ness Monster or Nessie. This legend has made the lake famous, indeed, since the so-called monster was spotted in the 30’s many underwater expeditions and researches have been conducted without any result. The creature is fictional but the lake still rouses the public’s interest and tourists are still coming to unravel the mystery! On the edge of the lake we can find the ruins of Urquhart’s castle where the Visitor Centre and a café stand.

Step 7: Crieff & the Glenturret Distillery

Necessary time: Half a day

Crieff is a market town mainly known for its whisky which is produced in Glenturret distillery. If you are interested in the preparation method of this typical Scottish drink (or Irish, the debate is still open) then come visit Glenturret’s distillery!

Step 8: St Andrews

Necessary time: Half a day

St Andrews is a small seaside town hosting the third oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. It is a very famous university, Prince William and the Duchess of de Cambridge used to study there! St Andrews is considered as the cradle of golf, the Golf legislative authority was founded there in 1754. The town now counts 5 golf courses; so, are you tempted by an introduction to this typical sport?

Step 9: Stirling

Necessary time: 1 day

Stirling was once the capital of the Scottish kingdom and a medieval town, it hosts an impressive castle and Wallace Monument, a tower elevating to 67 metres, built to commemorate Sir William Wallace, one of the main leaders during the First War for Scottish Independence.

Step 10: The Kelpies

Necessary time: 1 hour

On your way back to Edinburgh stop at the Kelpies, 30-metre-high sculptures representing horses. According to the legends, kelpies are mythological creatures living in running waters, they often take the form of a horse but they can also take a human form.

Return to Edinburgh

Here you are, it’s the end of this itinerary, have a last stop at the Elephant House Café which is now famous for often hosting J.K. Rowling when she started to think about the Harry Potter story.

Feel free to adapt timings of each step of this itinerary according to your wishes! You can also combine Scotland and a bit of England!  As for nature, don’t forget Wales which has not been invaded by tourists yet 😉

Première étape : Édimbourg

Temps nécessaire : 2 jours

Édimbourg est la capitale de l’Écosse,  c’est une ville qui offre de nombreuses curiosités : entre ses ruelles pavées, son architecture néo-classique et néo-gothique, ses légendes et souterrains, vous ne pourrez pas vous ennuyer ! Impossible de manquer le château d’Édimbourg, en effet il domine la ville, perché en haut de la colline de Castle Rock. Visitez ensuite le Mary King’s Close, ce labyrinthe de ruelles et souterrains qui fut construit par les habitants de la ville au 17ème siècle, le Mary King’s Close est réputé pour ses mythes et légendes.

Puis, baladez-vous dans le centre-ville, le Royal Mile est l’artère principale et le cœur de la vieille ville : admirez ses ruelles pavées, écoutez les joueurs de cornemuse dans la rue et pourquoi ne pas faire une dégustation de haggis ?

Pensez au musée national d’Écosse qui est gratuit, son architecture intérieure est magnifique et sa collection très variée. Si le soleil est au rendez-vous prévoyez une petite randonnée jusqu’au sommet  de Arthur’s Seat, un volcan éteint situé tout proche de la ville et qui offre une vue imprenable sur celle-ci !

Étape 2 : Glasgow

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Bien qu’Édimbourg soit la capitale écossaise, Glasgow est la plus grande ville d’Écosse et troisième ville du Royaume-Uni. Elle abrite de nombreux musées gratuits tels que le Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum et le Riverside Museum dont le design est impressionnant ! Pour en savoir plus sur la Cornemuse direction le National Piping Centre ! Puis prenez votre pause-déjeuner dans les jardins botaniques de Glasgow.

Étape 3 : Loch Lomond

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Ce lac (ou loch) est situé au sud des Highlands écossais, c’est le plus grand des lochs de Grande-Bretagne, sa superficie est de 71 km2. Arrêtez-vous pour une balade et un pic-nic au bord du loch avant d’embarquer pour une mini croisière d’environ une heure (pour réserver c’est par ici). Prévoyez des vêtements chauds et une veste imperméable 😉

Étape 4 : Fort William & Glenfinnan viaduct

Temps nécessaire : 1 jour

Fort William est la deuxième plus grande ville des Highlands après Inverness. Fort William est située au pied de Ben Nevis, le sommet le plus haut du Royaume-Uni (1,344 mètres d’altitude). On y trouve aussi la gare ferroviaire d’où part le Jacobite Train pour rejoindre Mallaig, en passant par le viaduc de Glenfinnan (fameuse scène de la saga Harry Potter). Les films cultes Braveheart et Highlander furent tournés non loin de Fort William.

L’Ile de Skye est la plus vaste de l’archipel des Hébrides. Elle est célèbre pour ses paysages sauvages et atypiques. Cette légende a fait la renommée du lac, en effet, depuis que la soi-disant créature fut aperçue dans les années 1930, de nombreuses expéditions sous-marines et  recherches ont été menées sans pour autant donner de résultat concret. La créature est fictive mais le lac suscite toujours autant d’intérêt, les touristes sont nombreux à y venir avec l’espoir de percer le mystère ! Sur les rives on trouve les ruines du château d’Urquhart où se trouve le Centre des visiteurs et un café.

Étape 7 : Crieff & The Glenturret Distillery

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée

Crieff est une ville marchande principalement connue pour son whisky, en effet celui-ci est produit dans la distillerie de Glenturret. Si vous êtes intéressé par la production de cette boisson typique écossaise (ou irlandaise, le débat est toujours ouvert) alors venez visiter la distillerie de Glenturret !

Étape 8 : St Andrews

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée

St Andrews est une petite ville côtière qui héberge la troisième plus ancienne université du Royaume-Uni après Oxford et Cambridge. C’est une université très renommée, le Prince William et la Duchesse de Cambridge y ont fait leurs études ! St Andrews est considérée comme le berceau du golf, l’autorité législative du golf y a été fondée en 1754. La ville compte aujourd’hui cinq parcours de golf ; alors, tenté par une initiation à ce sport typique ?

Étape 9 : Stirling

Temps nécessaire : 1/2 journée – 1 jour

Stirling fut autrefois la capitale du royaume d’Écosse et une ville médiévale, elle possède un château impressionnant et le Wallace Monument, une tour s’élevant à 67 mètres de haut, construite en commémoration de Sir William Wallace, un des principaux leaders pendant la Première Guerre pour l’Indépendance écossaise.

Étape 10 : The Kelpies

Temps nécessaire : 1 heure

En redescendant de Stirling vers Édimbourg faites un arrêt aux Kelpies, deux sculptures de chevaux d’une trentaine de mètres de hauteur. D’après les légendes écossaises, les kelpies sont des créatures  métamorphes vivants dans les eaux courantes qui prennent le plus souvent la forme de chevaux, elles peuvent aussi prendre une forme humaine.

Retour à Édimbourg

Et voilà, vous êtes arrivé à la fin de cet itinéraire, terminez par un arrêt au Elephant House, célèbre café que J.K. Rowling fréquentait régulièrement où elle trouva son inspiration pour écrire Harry Potter.

Libre à vous d’adapter les timings de chaque étape de cet itinéraire en fonction de vos envies ! Vous pouvez aussi combiner un bout d’Écosse avec un peu d’Angleterre ! Pour le côté nature n’oubliez pas le Pays de Galles qui n’est pas encore très touristique 😉

Matilda’s character is inspired by Roald Dahl’s novel (Roald Dahl wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Matilda is a young girl neglected by her parents; she is very clever and discovers that she has a special power! Go to the show to find out the ending 😉

5- Thriller

A tribute to the king of Pop Michael Jackson, Thriller will astonish you! Featuring the first songs performed by the Jackson 5 to his most famous hits such as Billie Jean and of course Thriller, the show brings back to life one of the best singer in the world for a few hours. The dance movements and mimics are quite impressive as well!

1- Bath : une visite guidée de la ville et des Thermes Romains

Bath est une ville située dans le Somerset, elle a le statut de cité. Elle fut fondée par les Romains pour en faire une ville thermale. Bath devint par la suite très populaire pour ses thermes et pour son architecture géorgienne. Elle est désormais inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Faites une visite guidée de la ville pour admirer les nombreux édifices architecturaux et surtout, visitez les Thermes Romains, symbole de la ville !

2- Cardiff : le château, une visite guidée et le Big Pit Museum

Cardiff est la capitale du Pays de Galles, elle se situe à l’Ouest de Bath à environ 1h15. Cardiff est célèbre pour accueillir de grands évènements sportifs, la ville a même obtenue le titre de Capitale Européenne du Sport en 2014, le rugby est le sport « préféré » des Gallois. Si vous êtes fan, ne manquez pas de visiter le Millenium Stadium.

Baladez-vous dans le centre-ville librement ou faites un tour avec un guide local, finissez le tour par la visite du château de Cardiff, il fut construit par les Romains en 1091 !

À environ une heure de route depuis le centre vous rejoindrez le Big Pit, un musée classé au patrimoine industriel qui fut une mine de charbon de 1880 à 1980. Désormais la mine se visite et des ateliers sont organisés pour les écoles. Il est intéressant de voir comment était la vie des milliers d’hommes qui y travaillaient.

3- Bristol : les œuvres d’art de Banksy

Bristol se trouve en Angleterre à moins d’une heure de route de Bath. La ville fut autrefois un port majeur, notamment pour le commerce de textile et malheureusement le commerce d’esclaves. C’est une ville colorée construite en hauteur, vous pourrez notamment admirer le fameux Clifton Suspension bridge, symbole de la ville.

Le fameux artiste Banksy réalisa ses premières œuvres à Bristol, Banksy est un réalisateur et peintre spécialisé dans le Street art, il peint ses œuvres pour faire passer des messages souvent à connotation politique. 4- Les Gorges de Cheddar

Les gorges de Cheddar sont situées tout près du village de Cheddar dans le Somerset. Les gorges abritent plusieurs grottes ou furent retrouvés de nombreux restes archéologiques dont le plus vieux squelette complet de Grande-Bretagne (vieux de 9000 ans). La grotte la plus surprenante est la grotte de Gough. L’une des routes (la B3135) menant aux Gorges a été élue Best road for driving in the UK tellement la vue y est spectaculaire !

1- Bath : a guided tour of the city and the Roman Baths

Bath is a town located in Somerset, it was originally founded by the Romans due to the proximity of thermal baths. Thanks to the baths and the gorgeous Georgian architecture the city slightly became more and more famous. It is now classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. Have a guided tour of the city to admire the numerous architectural buildings and above all, visit the Roman Baths, a symbol of the city.

2- Cardiff : a guided tour, the castle and the Big Pit Museum

Cardiff is Wales’ capital city, it is located to the West of Bath (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes away). Cardiff is famous for hosting many high-profile sporting events, it was even awarded the title of European Capital of Sport in 2014; rugby is the “favourite” welsh sport. If you are a fan, do not miss the Millennium Stadium.

Have a stroll in the city centre freely or have a tour held by a local guide, end the tour by a visit of Cardiff castle which was built by the Romans in 1091!

At approximately an hour’s drive from Cardiff centre you’ll arrive at the Big Pit, a museum classified as an industrial heritage museum which was a coal mine from 1880 to 1980. Nowadays you can visit the mine and school groups can have special workshops. It is very interesting to see how life was for the thousands of men working there at that time.

3- Bristol : Banksy Street Art

Bristol is located in England, less than an hour’s drive from Bath. The town was once a major port, especially for textile trade and unfortunately slave trade. This is a colourful city, built high-up, among which the famous Clifton Suspension bridge stands.

The well-known artist Banksy first painted in Bristol’s streets, Banksy is a filmmaker and a painter specialising in street art, he paints to pass on messages, often with a political meaning. Go on a special guided tour of Banksy’s street art and finish with a painting workshop (send us an email for further information).

4- Cheddar Gorge

The Cheddar Gorge is located very close to Cheddar’s village in Somerset. The Gorge hosts several caves in which were found many archaeological remains including the oldest skeleton of Great Britain (9000 years old). The most surprising cave is Gough’s Cave; you can see hundreds of stalagmites! One of the roads leading to the Gorge (the B3135) was even elected Best road for driving in the UK as its view is so spectacular!

Home Alone, de son titre original est une comédie américaine et un classique de Noël qui se regarde et se re-regarde. C’est l’histoire d’un jeune garçon qui se retrouve seul chez lui après que ses parents l’aient oublié en partant en vacances pour Paris. Il se retrouve en totale indépendance et devra déjouer le plan des cambrioleurs qui tentent de s’introduire dans sa maison. À regarder avec les sous-titres en français la première fois puis avec les sous-titres en anglais et ainsi de suite. C’est un film pour jeune public qui est facile à comprendre.

2- La saga Harry Potter pour tout le monde

Avec les huit films Harry Potter vous ne vous ennuierez pas pendant la période des fêtes, ces films sont un très bon outil pour s’exercer à l’écoute de l’anglais britannique. Amusez-vous à noter les différences de traduction des noms de personnage et des lieux de l’anglais vers le français et même en d’autres langues ! Par exemple : le professeur Sirius Rogue est appelé Severus Snape en version originale, les Italiens l’ont eux traduit par Severus Piton !

3- Love Actually & The Holiday pour les romantiques

Ces deux comédies romantiques américaines/ britanniques sont idéales à regarder pendant la période des fêtes. Tandis que Love Actually entremêle l’histoire de plusieurs personnes à Noël à Londres, The Holiday est l’histoire de deux femmes, une Américaine et une Anglaise qui ont des vies opposées et vont s’échanger leur maison (une villa californienne contre un cottage typique anglais) : leur vie en sont bouleversées.

…et ceux qui aiment Noël également ! Le Grinch est à l’origine un personnage fictif de livre pour enfants. Le Grinch est une créature vivant comme un hermite, grincheux et qui déteste les célébrations de Noël, c’est en entendant les chants de Noël qu’il décide de saboter Noël.

5- Die Hard pour les bad-ass

Die Hard c’est l’histoire de John McClane, policier new-yorkais qui rend visite à son ex-femme et ses enfants pour Noël. Il retrouve son ex-femme à la soirée de Noël de son travail, mais les festivités sont interrompues par un groupe de terroristes. McClane va devoir déjouer les plans des méchants.

Même si regarder les films en version originale est un très bon moyen d’habituer son oreille, ce n’est pas suffisant. C’est une des quelques méthodes à adopter en complément des leçons à l’école, découvrez les autres méthodes ici.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it really is in the UK when the country sparkles and there’s a special atmosphere in the air. It may not be as it is portrayed in Dickens novels with snow covered streets and Victorian lanterns and decorations, in fact white Christmases are rare, but there is something quite magical this time of year around the country…

1. Christmas Lights

Most cities, towns and villages are twinkling by the time December comes around. High streets adorn beautiful lights, the most famous being those in Central London. The lights down Oxford Street, Carnaby Street and Regent Street have become a tourist attraction in their own right and special walking tours and open top bus tours are available to book with Maypole Travel to get the best possible experience. People also look forward to the spectacular window displays at Harrods and Fortnum and Mason.

2. Food, glorious food!

It is a time for families and friends to come together and feast. We’ll worry about our waistline in January. On 25^th December we surround ourselves with the ones we love for Christmas dinner; turkey and all the trimmings. And in case you weren’t stuffed enough, we finish off with Christmas pudding! Traditionally, a coin was mixed into the pudding and whoever found the coin would have good luck, but nowadays we are all to safety conscious to engage in such a wreckless activity! During Christmas dinner we pull crackers, another British tradition invented by Tom Smith of London in 1847.

3. Christmas Markets

The whole country goes shopping mad in the lead up to Christmas and there are some lovely Christmas markets to stroll through. One of the main ones in London is in Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park but if you want a less manic setting, Greenwich market is the one to visit. Amble through with a mulled wine and take in the Christmassy atmosphere.

4. Christmas Carols

Carollers are everywhere in December and it is quite calming when you are rushing around doing your Christmas shopping to take a minute and listen to the live soothing Christmas carols, and to truly remember the meaning of Christmas. Many carols such as “Good King Wenceslas” which have gained popularity today were printed in Piae Cantiones, a collection of late medieval Latin songs which was first published in 1582. Today carols are regularly sung at Christian religious services.

5. Pantomimes 

Ask any British person if they have been to a panto and certainly the answer will be “yes!” Pantos spring up all over the UK at Christmas and New Year, they are family theatre productions with slapstick comedy based on a traditional fairy tale. The bigger productions almost always employ celebrities and feature gender-crossing parts and a “baddie”.  Audience participation is encouraged making pantos a much loved British tradition.

6. The Queen’s Speech

At 15.00 GMT every Christmas Day, after finishing off Christmas dinner, the nation sits down to hear the Queen’s Speech (or we are supposed to anyway!). In a nutshell, it is a list of the laws that the government hopes to get approved by Parliament over the coming year and the Queen gives details of upcoming visits to the UK by other heads of state and any state visits she is making overseas. 2018 will be the 65^th Queen’s Speech, she missed 2 when she was pregnant.

1- A guided tour of the city

Liverpool is a surprising city, mixing modernity and a range of different architectural styles going from the Tudor era until today. Liverpool is home to several ethnic communities, the Chinese community being the oldest in Europe. We can find the tallest Chinese arch of Europe standing in the quarter of Chinatown (it measures 44 feet).

2- Albert Dock

Liverpool counts several docks, the most famous being the Albert Dock which gathers several classified buildings. The dock was once used to receive exotic goods such as cotton, tea, silk, sugar… Albert Dock is one of the most visited attractions of Liverpool.

3- The Beatles Story Museum

The famous band is native to Liverpool and you could probably guess even if you didn’t know. There is a special atmosphere about this city: paintings and art created in the effigy of the band, their songs are played everywhere… Liverpool has mainly developed tourism thanks to The Beatles and other music bands. So it makes sense to visit The Beatles Story Museum. You will discover the beginnings of the band, the solo carrier of each member and iconic items such as Georges Harrison’s first guitar. This museum is one of the most visited in the United Kingdom so do not forget to book in advance!

4- A river cruise over the Mersey

If you come to Liverpool in spring or summer, book a cruise on the River Mersey. From the sea you will get a stunning view of the 3 symbolic buildings called the “Liverpool’s Three Graces”: the Royal Liver building, the Cunard building and the Port of Liverpool building. The style of these buildings is so different that this seafront is considered as one of the most impressive in the world.

5- The International Slavery Museum

This museum is also located on the Albert Dock, just a couple of metres away from the quay where the slaves’ commercial ship were arriving. The museum opened in 2007 which was the bicentenary year of the abolition of the British slave trade. As it is named, the museum is dedicated to the story of the colonial slavery.

6- The Tate Liverpool

The first Tate museum opened in 1897, it’s today the one we call Tate Britain. As of now, there are 4 museums: two in London, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, one in Cornwall, Tate St Ives and Tate Liverpool. Tate museums are dedicated to modern art, they are all free of entry (except for exhibitions) but school groups need to pre-book.
